Introduction to Heteroptera & Homoptera of LincolnshireThis is a featured page

Introduction
A photographic guide to the Homoptera, and Heteroptera that can be found in Lincolnshire. Both are sub-orders of the order Hemiptera. In this Wiki the sub-order Heteroptera is covered in its entirety whereas the sub-order Homoptera only covers hoppers, namely, plant, tree and frog, (the latter often referred to as spittle bugs). Aphids and Psyllids, which belong to the sub-order Homoptera could well be covered sometime in the future.

Acknowledgements
My thanks go out to all those on the hosting site Flickr, who have over the years helped me in identifying many an invertebrate. I do though have to single out two guys to whom I will always be indebted, namely Joe Botting, and Tristan Bantock. Should Herbert Nickel think I had forgoten him, (no chance), forever indebted to him too.

Joe Botting: Palaeontologist and natural science curator at the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre, with a specialist interest in Hemiptera, in particular Auchenorrhyncha.

Tristan Bantock: Biologist with a broad interest in natural history including most insect groups, particularly Lepidoptera.

Ashley Wood: Artist, wildlife photographer, with a special interest in Heteroptera nymph identification.

Dr Alan Stewart, BSc (East Anglia) MSc (Durham) PhD (Wales) Sussex university - Environmental Science. For the positive identification of the leaf hopper Zyginella pulchra

Identification Aids
Images:
Images alone are by no means the bottom line in positive ID's of Hemiptera, (in general). Variation within a species, similarities in a genus, often so subtle that clarification by means of dissection, or the aid of a microscope is required. With regard to the species depicted in this Wiki the majority have been identified by one of the experts listed.in the acknowledgements section. Of course there are species that can be identified from images alone, Ledra aurita to name but one.

Host Plant/s:
Often a crucial aid along with habitat, and should always be recorded with a find. It will be found that the BRC is of great help, and is used throughout this Wiki. Please note that the addition of host plant data is on going.
